How to check a breeder or seller

There is no public register of breeders as such. What can be checked is the shape of their identifiers, the data the listing must carry and, with the code, the animal establishment.
  1. 1. Read the listing carefully

Look for the breeder or establishment number and the animal’s identification number. If they are missing, ask for them in writing.

  2. 2. Ask for the REGA code

With the code you can find the record in the official search. You run the query yourself.

  3. 3. Keep the person and the animal apart

We check no one’s identity. What you can check is the animal: its microchip and vaccination dates.

Asking is not distrusting. An organisation that looks after its animals well usually answers this in a minute, and sometimes appreciates it.
