How to check whether vaccination and microchip dates fit together

We check that vaccinations are after birth and not in the future and, for travel within the EU, the order of chip and rabies vaccination, the age at rabies vaccination and the 21-day wait.

What it checks

  • That vaccination dates are after birth and not in the future.
  • That the rabies vaccination is not earlier than the chip implant.
  • That at least 21 days pass between the first rabies dose and travel.

What it does not check

  • Whether the manufacturer’s protocol has more than one dose: the 21 days run from the last primary dose, and the passport shows it.
  • Whether there were revaccinations or whether they were given within the validity period.
  • That the vaccination was actually given.
  • That the passport was signed by an authorised vet.
  • The animal’s health.

The dates that have to fit

  1. Chip first: a rabies vaccination given before identification does not count for travel within the EU (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/688, Annex VII).
  2. Age: the primary vaccination counts if given at 12 weeks or older.
  3. Wait: 21 days from the end of the primary vaccination before travelling (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/131, Art. 8). A revaccination within the validity period needs no wait.

Frequently asked questions

What if I only know the approximate date of birth?

Mark it as approximate. With approximate dates we never treat week-based rules as something to check: we ask you to confirm with the card.

Does this apply outside the EU?

Travel rules are shown only in jurisdictions that apply the EU pet-movement rules. Other countries have their own entry rules.

Are there exceptions for puppies?

Yes. The destination country may accept animals under 12 weeks, or aged 12 to 16 weeks before the 21 days have passed, if it has authorised this and publishes it on an official website (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/131, Art. 9). Check before travelling.

Wasn’t this Regulation 576/2013?

It applied until 21 April 2026. Since 22 April, Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/131 and Annex VII of Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/688 apply, with the same 12-week and 21-day rules.
